Vitamin B

Vitamin B is a popular group of nutrients which are well known for supporting the nervous system, energy levels, and general wellbeing.
Once thought to be a single vitamin, the B-vitamin group contains thiamine (Vitamin B 1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid
(B9) and various cobalamins (B12 group).
Vitamin B supplements can be purchased individually, or in compounds containing all eight B vitamins called vitamin B complex. There are specific properties in each of the B
vitamins, and many supplements and multivitamins contain B vitamins. It is helpful to talk to your health practitioner to ensure you are getting the right ones, as there are many different
compounds and formulas available.
In particular, Vitamin B2 is reputed to deter insects due to the odour it emits on the skin. Vitamin B complex is sometimes taken by people studying for exams to support concentration.
B vitamins are essential in pregnancy, and support energy levels and general wellbeing. Folic acid is highly recommended during pregnancy to reduce the risk of birth defects.
Most B vitamins are found in the same foods, which include meat, fish and dairy products, whole grains, brewer's yeast, bananas, molasses and chili. Liver, turkey and tuna are particularly good sources.
Did you know' more than 25 nutrients were previously thought to be B vitamins, which explains the 'gaps' in the B vitamin group number system.
